Congratulations to the Fall 2021 International Studies Graduates: 8 International Studies Majors and 1 International Studies Minor!

Lauren Salloum, a fourth year student in International Studies, has been awarded a $2,500 Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU) fellowship for Summer 2021 to work with Dr. Michael Žmolek in commencing work on an edited collection of primary source documents on the history of capitalism.

Congratulations to IS senior Lexy Winecke on presenting her research at ESURF. Lexy worked with Dr. Kathleen Newman (Spanish & Portuguese) on her honors thesis "Feminist Activism and the Legalization of Abortion in Argentina."

International Studies student Holly Harris was chosen to be an Emerging Leader by Global Ties U.S. which is a a non-partisan, non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. This incredible honor allowed Holly to learn and discuss problems affecting the international field during a national meeting with other organizations, U.S. government agencies, and leaders in the international exchange field. Holly was able to apply for this position as a Program Coordinator at CIVIC.

First published in 2019, Yasmine Ramadan’s Space in Modern Egyptian Fiction explores how aesthetic landscapes were transformed by Egyptian writers of the 60s generation. Why did this literary generation cause a marked shift in the representation of rural, urban, and exilic spaces? International Studies Student Claire Player was awarded the Kristen K. Lippke Scholarship at the University of Iowa’s annual Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women on April 7, 2021. Claire was one of 13 students recognized with scholarships to honor their work and commitment to women’s issues, diversity, and social activism.

With great sorrow, we share the loss of International Studies alum, Senéad Short. She touched many of our lives in the International Studies Program and she will be greatly missed.

The University of Iowa’s community service classes, which sometimes coincide with service trips over spring break, are continuing to complete service projects despite in-person restrictions and mostly virtual interactions with community groups.

IS:3012 - Community-Engaged Learning will be offered for the second time in Spring 2021. This experiential learning course provides the opportunity to gain experience working with a Local/Global Nonprofit. Dr. Ari Ariel, associate professor of Instruction in International Studies and History and the Associate Director of International Studies, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association for Jewish Studies, the largest Jewish Studies organization in the world. He started his three year term in December 2020.
